U-Haul Acquires Space Savers Self Storage in Scranton, PA

Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc., which operates more than 1,300 self-storage locations across North America, has acquired Space Savers Self Storage in Scranton, Pa. U-Haul Storage of Scranton at 210 S. 7th Ave. comprises 28,750 square feet of storage space in 260 drive-up units. Built in 1986, it contains five single-story buildings on 2 acres. The property will be operated remotely by U-Haul Moving & Storage of Scranton at 375 N. 7th Ave., which opened the same year. The facility is about a half-mile south of the newly acquired property.

U-Haul has upgraded the site’s security with the addition of an automated gate system and 25 new security cameras. Unit doors were also refurbished or replaced, according to a press release.

"We are excited to give this growing community the self-storage space it requires," said Jim Mazoni, general manager. "By taking the longtime Space Savers Self Storage property and renovating it, U-Haul is being environmentally friendly while also expanding its self-storage network."

The acquisition of the Scranton property was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, the release stated. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.

Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at its owned facilities throughout North America.
