Field Mini Storage Opens in Scio, NY, With Amish Sheds as Self-Storage Units

Sandy’s Place, a Scio, N.Y., retail business specializing in Amish craftwork, furniture and sheds, has opened Field Mini Storage on the backside of its property featuring Amish-constructed sheds as its storage units. The self-storage operation on State Route 19 will be run as a separate business and launched with 10 sheds varying from 64 to 160 square feet, according to the source.

Owners Larry and Sandy Field launched the storage business because Larry intends to retire soon, and the couple wanted something “simple” to do, Sandy told the source. “We inquired around and found that most of the places with [storage] units are already filled, so we thought it would be a good business to get into,” she said.

The self-storage business is accessible to customers via a gravel driveway. The Fields plan on adding additional storage sheds, including some larger sizes. The units are painted green with black trim and are fitted with motion-detection video cameras for security.

“The sheds are all wooden, brand new and constructed by the Amish,” Sandy Field told the source. “You won’t see any daylight coming through them. They are very secure and well-built. They even have venting.”
