Water for Sudan Program Supported by A-1 Self Storage

California self-storage operator A-1 Self Storage is providing monetary support to Water for Sudan, a program devoted to drilling fresh drinking wells in remote villages of Southern Sudan, providing residents with clean, safe water. As of May 2010, Water for Sudan had successfully drilled 76 borehole wells, bringing water to tens of thousands of people.

Southern Sudan is a landlocked region of Africa approximately the size of Texas. According to WaterforSudan.org, the people in the area are often underserved by the larger international humanitarian and government-sponsored relief organizations.

Southern Sudan residents often must travel miles to collect water for themselves and their families. The water they collect is often from ponds, marshes, ditches and hand-dug wells, which can contain parasites and disease-bearing bacteria.

Based in Rochester, N.Y., Water for Sudan Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation founded in 2003. The organization operates with a small paid staff as well as a network of volunteers. It is supported by civic, educational and faith-based groups, individual donors, and foundation grants.

A-1 Self Storage has 16 locations in the San Diego County area and more than 40 locations statewide. It is the self-storage division of the Caster Cos., a third-generation, family-owned company headquartered in South California since 1959. Caster Cos. develops and manages A-1 Self Storage, A-1 Car Storage and other commercial properties in California. Its portfolio includes more than 4 million square feet of real estate.
