Condoministoriums

How would you feel about people buying rather than renting their storage units? Would you get out of the mini-storage game and sell real estate for a living? You'd better give it some thought, because the time is nigh. Not too long ago, ISS ran a press release about RoboVault, a high-security storage facility in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where tenants can rent standard units or purchase vaults ...

Avast! Assurances From 'Dear Abbey'

I got a chuckle out of this one. On Friday, I read a Paramus (N.J.) Post article (an advice column really) in which an engaged widow wanted to know what she should think about her betrothed now that she's discovered he has two storage units full of stuff he won't toss. "He's really nice and normal in most other ways," she said. The woman seemed to feel the use of self-storage indicates some ...

Operation Kaboom

We've been implicated in a terrorist plot! OK, so it was a theoretical plot, but we were embroiled nonetheless. According to an article published in Tuesday's newspapers, Operation Kaboom was hatched two years ago by six NYC counter-terrorist detectives who rented a Brooklyn mailbox and a storage unit in the Bronx to see if they could amass enough ammonium nitrate and fuel oil to build a truck ...

From Pack Rats to Rubbish Boys

I received an e-mail response to Tuesday's post about the new PACK RAT enterprise—a representative from 1-800-GOT-JUNK? (formerly The Rubbish Boys) wanted to make sure I knew about storage facilities that use junk-removal companies to keep on top of their clutter. Truthfully, I wasn't aware of such a partnership; but upon visiting www.1800gotjunk.com, I see some large storage players are indeed ...

The Pack Rats are coming!

We recently posted a press release to the ISS website regarding a new mobile-storage contender entering the Phoenix market: 1-800-PACK-RAT. The company plans to open at least four facilities in Arizona in the next few years; and based on my observations, it isn't messing around. While out doing some pre-Halloween scavenging with my husband this past weekend, we drove by this nifty marketing ...

Bringing Women and Minorities Into the Construction Fold

It's no revelation, just a simple fact: The health of our industry is intimately tied to that of the construction field. When materials and labor are hard to come by, self-storage also suffers. Right now, construction is experiencing a woeful shortage of skilled workers. If you look at the press releases posted to the RSS feed this week, you'll see what some organizations are doing to attract ...

Validation

On the 17th, I posted an entry regarding the attention our industry has received from Architectural Lighting magazine thanks to Flex Storage Systems of Kansas, which received an AL design award. The gist was self-storage is often (erroneously) accused of being the low-class citizen of the architectural world. In the minds of many potential users, mention of "self-storage" inspires visions of ...
