Key Cameras

With its ascension in the public eye, self-storage has made new friends ... and new enemies. Negative press aside, the world at large now understands a few things about how this business is run: In most cases, you have a quiet facility with minimal manpower. Last week in Orange County, Fla., a band of three criminals took advantage of this fact—in broad daylight no less. What they didn't realize ...

Ancillary Services Take Blows

The Zoning Board of Appeals for Springfield, Mass., this week denied the request of a new self-storage owner to offer U-Haul truck rentals as an adjunct to his business. After being being denied a permit for the use by his building inspector, Robert Kushner appealed to the board, only to be told rental trucks are not an accessory for self-storage—even after his lawyer presented a list of storage ...

Merge Left

A guest blog spot by ISS Associate Editor Elaine Foxwell Elaine with her equine friend, Slayer. I creep onto the self-storage Information Superhighway in my Blogmobile for the first time. The infotraffic is flying by so fast it feels more like I’m on the Information Autobahn. I cautiously accelerate in the right lane, summoning up the courage to increase my virtual velocity and merge left. I ...

Where do U go, U-Store-It?

The show's over, and it's back to business as usual. I've spent the past couple of days reacquainting myself with self-storage in the news. I found the anticipated palette of spectacles including arson, robberies and vandalism ... But what the heck is going on at U-Store-It? Several articles in last week's The Plain Dealer and an editorial in The Motley Fool tell how a dispute within the ...

So I mispredicted ...

I anticipated having time during Friday's expo-hall hours to post more show photos and updates to the blog. But the floor was still buzzing, we were shooting all kinds of video, and there simply wasn't an opportunity to hole up with the laptop. (I'd hate to be an introvert at one of these high-impact expos—the perpetual activity would badger the psyche.) The show's last day was non-stop. Some ...

Vegas ... Head on a Swivel

Talk about live action—I'm actually sitting in our booth at the Inside Self-Storage Las Vegas Expo as I write. Here in the middle of it all. Tucked away at a table in the corner of the booth, with attendees peering over, wondering what the heck I'm doing. Guess a chick tap-tap-tapping away on a laptop with a mischevious look on her face must be all too intriguing. So much has gone on since the ...

Bright Lights, Big City ... Here We Come

Today I head out. After months of planning and prepping, the event is here and now: the Inside Self-Storage Las Vegas Expo. It's the largest industry event of the year—even as I type, thousands of your colleagues are on their way to the relentless city where dreams are dashed and realized depending on the spiciness of the morning's Bloody Mary. I've lost track of how many times I've been to ...
