Self-Storage Construction and Development: ISS 2011 Survey

Would you be interested to know where self-storage facilities are being built over the next 12 months? Would it be useful to understand which markets are supporting new storage projects and the types and sizes of facilities being erected? Inside Self-Storage (ISS) is attempting to collect information about self-storage construction activity in the U.S. and abroad with a newly launched survey, and we need reader input to help us all better grasp the self-storage development landscape.

A recent release by the Associated General Contractors of America indicates ongoing cost increases related to building materials threatens to drive more construction employees and firms out of work. Development has been sluggish in self-storage and other industries in recent years due to lack of funding for new projects. Reports from builders, contractors and components suppliers who work closely with ISS align with this reality; but they also, cautiously, hint at hope and recovery for this industry.

We want to know more. Last week, ISS launched two surveys, one geared toward self-storage owner/operators who are building or planning to build facilities in the next year, the other for self-storage construction professionals. The intent of these questionnaires is to obtain a clearer picture of development activity and answer the question: Does self-storage, as an industry, continue to grow; or are we dealing with a limited pool of facilities that will change hands and be upgraded to compete in their markets?

If you’re a self-storage owner or investor, we invite you now to participate in our quick, anonymous survey related to self-storage building, renovation and expansion. The collected findings will be shared with readers on the ISS website and in a special construction edition of ISS magazine. Complete the survey now.

If you’re a self-storage builder or developer, please participate in our vendor-specific study. As an incentive, we’ll enter every company who completes the survey into a drawing to win a free media placement in ISS magazine. For details, please contact associate editor John Carlisle at

Progress in the areas of construction and development can be key indicators of self-storage supply, demand and competition, which are relevant to everyone who works in this business, from the part-time facility manager to the CEO of a real estate investment trust. By participating in our survey effort, you can help us all know more about the health of the industry that sustains us. We greatly appreciate your input.
