We haven't even had time to carve the pumpkins yet and it's snowing in New England. Moreover, I haven't had time to finish my autumn maintenance to-do list yet. For example, I thought I'd plant more tulip bulbs, transplant the peonies and rake the three inches of leaves that have completely covered the yard.

I'm thinking the Maple saplings that have sprouted up in the rain gutters are a clear indication that there's a major breakdown in maintenance scheduling around here. If we don't get in gear, there'll be more than scheduling breaking down.

The same goes for your storage facility. Have you had time to tend to inspecting your building and grounds? In a recent article for ISS, Terry Campbell suggests cleaning out the gutters in the spring and the fall. If clogged, he says, gutters will back up and the water will pool on the roof. Without anywhere to drain, water creates leaks. Leaks create damaged goods in units underneath. Like I said, major breakdown is inevitable.

If you're not sure where to begin at your site, you might want to start with the Exterior Maintenance Checklist provided by ISS. I know without a list, I'm lost and could end up with full-grown Maples rooted in my roof. Fortunately, the snow is supposed to blow over by tomorrow and nicer autumn weather is on the weather map for the weekend. Looks like I have my work and weekend cut out for me. :(
