Keeping It Safe

At least one of a string of fires plaguing self-storage facilities across the nation now has a cause—and a motive. Four people have been charged with breaking into several RVs at Stockade Self Storage in Harnett County earlier this month. The thieves then set the RVs ablaze to hide their crime. Overall, nine trailers and two boats were destroyed Aug. 4. The crime is a good reminder about two essential components for all self-storage facilities: good insurance and a lot of security.

While I don’t know what kind of security system Stockade Self Storage offers, I do know determined thieves will find a way. So that means your security system must be solid. No fake cameras. Forget barbed-wire fencing. You need the real deal. If you’re not sure what’s available—high-tech cameras and DVRs are top choices—or just don’t know where to begin, download the ISS June e-book, Technically Speaking: How Software and Security are Shaping Today’s Self-Storage Industry.

If you’re also wondering if your insurance coverage will be adequate if the unthinkable happens, head over to the Hot Topics section on the ISS website and click on Insurance. You’ll find a slew of great articles on everything from tenant insurance to recovering from a facility fire.

Even if you think you’ve taken the right security measures and have adequate insurance, take a moment now to evaluate both. Making small changes now could save huge headaches—and serious money—later.
