O’Neil Software, a provider of software solutions for records-storage centers worldwide, has received European Union (EU) Safe Harbor Certification from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Established for U.S. companies that do business within the EU, the Safe Harbor Privacy Principles are designed to meet the European “adequacy” standard for privacy protection.

When the European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection went into effect in 1998, one consequence was to prohibit the transfer of personal data to nations outside the EU that failed to meet the “adequacy” standard, according to a press release. Achieving certification means O’Neil will be allowed to receive personal data from EU countries.

“The decision to pursue EU Safe Harbor Certification has been a natural progression, given our dedication to the data security and service of our clients,” said Ian Thomas, executive vice president. “Personally identifiable information requires exemplary care, and O’Neil has worked diligently to adhere to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s seven safe-harbor principles.”

O’Neil attained certification status through its participation in the TRUSTe Privacy Program for TRUSTed Cloud Data, which provides professional services for privacy certification and third-party dispute resolution. O’Neil has also earned the TRUSTe Certified Privacy Seal.

O’Neil serves more than 1,000 records centers in more than 80 countries, including some that operate in conjunction with self-storage businesses. In addition to software, the company specializes in barcode tracking, portable printers, wireless handhelds and Web technology.
