Residents Oppose Construction of CubeSmart Self-Storage Headquarters in East Whiteland, PA

Residents living near the construction of a new CubeSmart corporate center in East Whiteland, Pa., are not happy the self-storage company has chosen their town for its new headquarters. Locals relayed their concerns for nearly two hours at a township supervisors meeting last week.

Chief among the complaints is the area has been rezoned since real estate investment trust CubeSmar received approval in 2006 for the buildings land-development plan. At the time, the region was zoned for commercial use. Since then, it has been rezoned for multi-family residences and is near the historic General Warren Village, a master-planned community.

CubeSmart began construction at 5 Old Lancaster Road last October. Company representatives appeared before the townships zoning hearing last month to ask for variances concerning signage.

During last weeks meeting, residents said they had met with Jerry Foster, CubeSmarts senior vice president, to discuss the buildings signage, but they still have concerns. At previous town meetings, they voiced opinions about increases in traffic, water runoff and light pollution.

The 86,000-square-foot corporate center will house 160 employees and feature a section dedicated for actual self-storage use. CubeSmart is currently based in Wayne, Pa.

CubeSmart owns or manages more than 500 self-storage facilities across the United States and operates the CubeSmart Network, which consists of more than 800 additional self-storage facilities. According to the Inside Self-Storage Top-Operators List , the company is the fourth largest operator of self-storage facilities in the United States.
